Dr. Estrada started his career in Biomedical research developing the first recombinant streptokinase produced in E. coli. This product is currently applied in the Cuban health system to treat the myocardia infarct. Product application saved the life of thousands of people. The patent about this product was granted in many countries around the world. Since 1994, he started working on aquatic biotechnology. He was involved first in fish transgenesis being part of a pioneer group in the field. Afterward, he started working on the development of products to improve aquaculture such as vaccines and neuropeptides that are able to connect growth and immunity generating eight patents granted in many countries. In 2008 he became the head of Animal Biotechnology Department, leading not only the aquatic biotechnology projects but also several research projects related with new veterinary vaccines development on different expression platforms and the revitalization of tick control in Cuba through GAVAC (the only vaccine for ectoparasites available in the market) application. During this period a novel and effective vaccine was developed and registered in Cuba against classical swine fever. As director of Agricultural biotechnology since 2015, he devotes his efforts in register new veterinary vaccines in Cuba and other countries. Additionally, he is involved in the agriculture improvement in Cuba through extension of transgenic crops and other developments. He is author of more than 100 publications in peer reviewed journals and 10 patents granted in many countries around the world.


He received the medal for the 30 Anniversary of the Science Academy of Cuba. “C.J. Finlay Medal” of the Cuban State Council, awarded for upstanding results on Science


He is the leader of 15 recognized achievements by the Cuban Academy of Science (Cuban Annual Research Award to Relevant Scientific Results).


He was also the leader of a team winning the 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2014 PAMBA Marine Biotechnology Award of Excellence competition.
